The field organizer's job, run well
A field organizer owns the distance between a list of names and a covered map. On a downballot race that means one person recruiting, scheduling, confirming, and reporting for a ward or a region, usually while also being the person who sets up the folding table. This is the job, phase by phase, and where the tooling carries it.
What the role owns
Recruitment
Turning supporters into scheduled volunteers: the table signup, the follow-up call, the ask that converts a rally attendee into a Saturday canvasser. The QR signup replaces the clipboard, and the follow-ups-due queue keeps every warm name from going cold.
Scheduling
Filling canvass launches, phone banks, and vote-center shifts without double-booking anyone. On the grid the organizer schedules a ward while the director watches the whole map, live in the same system.
Confirmation
The day-before call that is the single biggest lever on attendance. The queue lists tomorrow's unconfirmed names every morning, and every contact logs with attribution, so two organizers never call the same volunteer twice.
Coverage
Answering "are we covered Saturday?" with a number instead of a feeling. The organizer's ward view in the 7am report shows coverage, open gaps with ranked fill candidates, and yesterday's no-shows.
The season, from the organizer's chair
August and September are recruitment and the first canvass launches, when the job is growing the pool and learning who shows up. October is confirmations and the early-voting build, when the job is turning a list of 100 names into 200 filled shifts without burning anyone out. The first week of November is execution, when the job is the gap panel and the reserve. The through line is that every phase writes into the same grid, so by election day the organizer is making fill decisions backed by three months of attendance data instead of memory.
